Castle Leslie Estate is a living, breathing organic Irish Estate, a unique part of Irish Heritage. Through Sammy’s Leslies leadership, it is an example of how an historic property can be brought back to life, gain sustainability through tourism, work symbiotically with the local communities with a commitment to preserving the environment.
Sammy’s family strongly believe in guardianship rather than ownership so the Estate is held in a trust allowing it will pass through the generations. This same protective ethos is reflected in the Estates approach to green issues. The environment is something which needs protected, preserved and sustained so future generations can enjoy it as we do.
The Castle Leslie team continually strive to find ways to improve the way we do things to ensure we are doing the best for the environment. The creation of the Castle Leslie Green Team encouraged all staff members to get involved and enthusiastic about Green issues with regular environmental polices being implemented ensuring we are as “green” as possible.
In the Castle, one of the most energy efficient heating and cooling system as been installed. What was needed was something which was sympathetic to the preservation of the Castle but also environmentally sensitive, efficient and economical and Calor Gas came up with the solution.
The Integrated Constructed Wetlands (ICW) is another project which has recently been completed on the Estate. This is a new environmentally way of providing an effective, robust, economical and low maintenance system for the treatment of sewerage effluent from the village of Glaslough – in essence, it is nature’s solution to nature’s problem. As it matures, the ICW provides attractive walks and riding trails around the banks of the wetlands ponds resulting in a stunning amenity addition to the Estate and a haven for much wildlife. For more information on the integrated wetlands project, check out the Castle Leslie Real Estate website.
Castle Leslie is committed to using local suppliers where possible on the Estate and part of the 17 year restoration plan for the Estate includes the restoration of the walled garden where we will grow our own produce as much as possible.
